Supplemental essays are additional college-specific essays that some universities require beyond the main college application essay (such as the Common App personal statement). These short responses give colleges a deeper look into who you are, what matters to you, why you are interested in their school, and how you will contribute to their campus community.

Unlike the personal statement, which focuses on your overall story and personal growth, supplemental essays are often designed to answer specific questions such as:

• Why do you want to attend this college?

• Why are you interested in your chosen major?

• What experiences, values, or perspectives will you bring to campus?

• How have you contributed to your community?

• What makes you a good fit for this university?

Strong supplemental essays are not about simply telling a college what you think they want to hear—they are about showing authentic connections between your experiences, your goals, and the opportunities the college offers. A thoughtful supplemental essay helps admissions counselors understand not only who you are, but also why you and that college are a great match.

Who This Is For
High school and college students applying for local, national, or institutional scholarships.

The answer depends on where you are in the application process, but these are the most common consultations for rising and current seniors:

• Getting Started Consultation – Not sure where to begin? We’ll map out your application timeline, prioritize next steps, and create a personalized plan for the months ahead.

• Common App Consultation – The Common Application opens on August 1, so June through August is the ideal time to complete your application before submission season begins. Together, we’ll strengthen every section of your application—including activities, honors, awards, leadership, work experience, and other entries—to ensure your accomplishments are presented in the strongest possible way. We’ll also review your application as a whole to make sure it tells a cohesive story. Most students submit applications between August and November.

• Supplemental Essay Consultation – Many colleges require additional essays beyond the personal statement. These prompts are specific to each college or university and become available through the Common App or the institution’s application. June through August is the ideal time to plan, draft, revise, and polish these essays so you’re ready to submit applications beginning August 1. We’ll also look at how each essay fits together to present a complete and compelling picture of who you are.

• Scholarship Essay & Interview Consultation – Whenever you find a scholarship opportunity that includes essays or interviews, let’s prepare for it together. Strong essays and interviews are often what distinguish students with similar GPAs, test scores, and extracurricular activities. January through March is typically the peak season for local scholarships, which often provide some of the best opportunities for students
